THE WORLD OF

WORKING GUNDOGS

"One of the pleasures of shooting is the company of a well trained gundog.  The choice of the breed of gundog is a matter of both personal taste and the type of shooting one is engaged in.  Different terrain and differing quarry dictate the choice of gundog.  Some will prefer the busy spaniel quartering the scrubland for pheasants or rabbits, others the questing of setters or pointers on the moorland, whilst others enjoy the retrieving breeds when wildfowling or at the driven game shoot." Retrievers

The group of gundogs referred to as retrievers includes some quite special breeds of gundogs.   These dogs vary in size, colouring and in their coat.  The one common denominator is the job they are required to do for the sportsman, namely retrieving shot game and fowl.

Most evolved in the British Isles with their common ancestors being firmly embedded in the ancient breeds of western European working dogs from which many of today's retriever breeds take their appearance and game finding ability.  Only two breeds, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, developed outside the British Isles
