The Hedgehog

There can be few gardens in rural Ireland that are not regularly visited by these nocturnal little creatures.  The hedgehog is a true omnivore with its diet consisting of worms, frogs, mice, large insects, bird’s eggs and even vegetables.  During the months of July and early August the female hedgehog, known as a sow, will give birth to up to eight young.

Unfortunately the mortality rate among young and immature hedgehog is very high, with many falling victim to cars and other road vehicles.  During the colder months hedgehogs hibernate, making their "nests" in dried leaves or grasses.  Gardeners in Ireland know and love this little animal and will usually search thoroughly any garden material before burning it in the winter months to ensure they do not contribute to the loss of this popular and welcomed garden resident.
