The Pine Marten

Found exclusively in wooded areas of the country, the pine marten is one of, if not the rarest mammal in Ireland.  This small, stoat like creature is a member of the weasel family and it is a skilled hunter of birds and their eggs, along with a variety of smaller mammals, including rodents such as rats, mice, voles and even rabbits.  Its coat is a dark brown colour, although lighter coloured variants can be found.  All pine martens have a characteristic yellow throat patch.  Martens are afforded protection by law in all parts of Ireland.
