The Retriever Breeds of the UK & Ireland
The
group of gundogs referred to as retrievers includes
some quite special breeds of gundogs.
These dogs vary in size, colouring and in their
coat. The one common denominator is the job
they are required to do for the sportsman, namely
retrieving shot game and fowl.
Most evolved in the British Isles with their common
ancestors being firmly embedded in the ancient
breeds of western European working dogs from which
many of today's retriever breeds take their
appearance and game finding ability.
Only two breeds, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and
the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, developed
outside the British Isles
